The guidance notes for dental practitioners on the safe use of X-ray equipment, published in 2020, set out the training requirements related to CBCT use. They explain that CBCT is currently not sufficiently taught in undergraduate dental programmes, and therefore, additional training is required.

  • The anatomy of the dentoalveolar region and relevant maxillofacial anatomy.
  • How to manipulate a CBCT data set ( including how this can be used for surgical and implant planning).
  • How to use radiological terminology to describe abnormalities.
  • How to describe common diseases that affect the jaws and their radiological appearance on CBCT.
  • How to write CBCT reports of the dentoalveolar region.
  • Identify when to refer cases for a second opinion and understand that fields of view that extend beyond the dentoalveolar region should be reported by a radiologist.

Lee is a specialist in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology and works as a Consultant Dental and Maxillofacial Radiologist at Kings College Hospital, London and at the Eastman Dental Hospital, University College London Hospitals. He is currently the Honorary Secretary of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.
