Course Content

Anatomy

For safe and effective surgery, it is vital to understand the vital structures of the head and neck. This module is taught by Dr Appoloneous Allen, who is very entertaining and will be emphasised throughout the course. By understanding the nerve and blood supply qualities of bone and soft tissues, you can place implants safely and predictably.

Imaging & CBCT in relation to implants

This module is taught in conjunction with CT Dent. Imaging and using 3D planning software are essential to implant treatment planning. Throughout the course, you’ll learn to manipulate CBCT scans to help you select ideal implant sizes and correct treatment protocols.

Treatment planning & case analysis for dental implants surgery

Learn the principles behind “reverse planning”. You will learn to plan your surgeries with the final outcome in mind. Considering soft tissues, bone quantity & quality, occlusion, soft tissue & periodontal factors, the remaining dentition, medical history and patient desires all need to be analysed. You will learn to effectively treatment plan prior to all your surgeries.

Biomechanics & implant design

By understanding implant design and biomechanics, you’ll be able to understand multiple implant systems. Even small differences in implant designs can significantly change their character and the way you should carry out surgery. In this module, you will learn to manipulate your treatment to accommodate for various implant designs and patient factors.

New occlusal concepts in implant dentistry

Learn the principles behind implant occlusion and accommodate for the lack of periodontal ligament around dental implants. With this knowledge, you can protect your implants and avoid complications.

Principles of subcrestal implant placement

Understand how subcrestal implant placement, in combination with the morse taper implant connection, allows the bone to grow over the head of an implant. This helps to prevent bone loss and improve implant aesthetics.

Abutment selection, platform switching & related histology

Abutments are the connection between the implant and the final prosthesis. Abutment designs, dimensions and connection types impact the surrounding bone and soft tissue. Learning to select abutment types improves both your surgical and prosthetic outcomes.

Bone graft – guided bone regeneration & socket preservation

Understand the different types of bone graft material available and their properties. Guided bone regeneration allows for the compensation of physiological and pathological bone loss, which can make implant treatments more complicated.

Correct surgical protocols

Practice placing implants and follow correct surgical protocols prior to placing implants in your patients. You’ll learn how to avoid over-heating of bone and position your implants in the correct angulation and depth.

Hands-on placement of implants

At the surgical residency you’ll treat a wide variety of cases which will get progressively more complex. Delegates will learn to manage a multitude of clinical scenarios. The residency will as much as possible reflect your general practice scenarios – i.e. you’ll treat what comes. Typically, delegates will experience single and multiple implant cases, bone grafting, and immediate placement, and in some cases full arch implant placement and sinus lifting.

Principles of flap design

Learn to manipulate and raise flaps to aid healing, facilitate tissue reservation and improve final aesthetic outcomes.

Provisional prosthesis to enhance aesthetics

Learn how temporary and immediate implant crown and bridges encourage growth and maintenance of soft tissues for improved aesthetic results.

Potential complications

Throughout the course you’ll learn how to recognise and avoid complications and failures. You’ll understand the principles of managing problems and receive on going mentoring.

Immediate placement

Learn the principles of immediate implant placement. Learn how to alter your surgical approach to successfully approach extraction and immediate placement of implants allowing you to significantly improve patient satisfaction and reduce surgical time.

Implant prosthetics

Learn the principles of immediate implant placement. Learn how to alter your surgical approach to successfully approach extraction and immediate placement of implants allowing you to significantly improve patient satisfaction and reduce surgical time.

Surgical draping & setup

Learn the principles of immediate implant placement. Learn how to alter your surgical approach to successfully approach extraction and immediate placement of implants allowing you to significantly improve patient satisfaction and reduce surgical time.
